Before humans were introduced to the Overworld, Notch created the Spawns. They were made with basic knowledge of themselves and their surroundings, and how to survive. Notch decided he wanted the Spawns to be the protectors of humans, and as such they are slightly faster and stronger, with a higher pain tolerance. It is very rare for them to die or be killed, but it can happen. The Spawns were designed to look like Notch's brother, Hero; while he hadn't yet met the humans when the Spawns were created, he loved them as much as his brother did.
